Fortunate to experience a great climate (over 300 days of sun, by local
accounts, per year), an ideal locale within San Diego County, wonderful housing
opportunities, an award-winning school district, and lots of recreational activities for numerous different
pastimes, its no surprise at how many new residents are attracted to Lemon
Grove each year.
Although only a few minutes from downtown San Diego, nestled in the middle of a twenty billion dollar a year trade area,
Lemon Grove has maintained its small town charm. Residing in Lemon Grove is not simply living in a town, but being part of a community that still values American traditions and a simpler way of
life! Known for having the "Best Climate on Earth", Lemon Grove provides residents with
the atmosphere, location, climate and amenities ideal for Southern California
living.
Originally an agricultural center renowned for its lemons, Lemon Grove is a today charming community
conveniently located about nine miles from downtown San Diego
(only a trolley-ride away) and boasting a population of about 26,000.
Close proximity to the heart of San Diego also makes commuting almost
effortless.
The area is popular with families, many new households moving to the area each year. As the town motto states, Lemon Grove has a great climate, with
average summer highs near 80 and lows around 57 degrees, while winter highs average 70 degrees and lows average 46
degrees.
Like many popular towns in Southern California, Lemon Grove boomed after World War II, mainly in the 1950s. But unlike many other cities, it managed to keep
its country atmosphere. Characteristic and appealing to those seeking small town charm, Lemon Grove
home owners are attentive to their properties, homes can be found on large
lots, there is an ample amount of trees,
and a good balance between new and older suburban homes exists. In
addition, home owners new to this area can expect numerous single-family housing choices at affordable
rates.
Although the community of Lemon Grove prides itself on having a small-town atmosphere in one of the largest counties in the nation, residents of Lemon Grove enjoy a
technologically advanced, innovative school system which in recent years has won awards for its web-based program,
LemonLINK. LemonLINK is a program focusing on high-speed connectivity, equity and adequate access to resources, development of web-based instructional tools, and ongoing professional development for
teachers. Not surprisingly, this program has become an integral part of the Lemon Grove School District.
LemonLINK has not only created a collaborative learning environment which
embraces students, teachers, and parents, but which also reaches out to the largest number of community members
possible. This endeavor has won awards and
appreciation nationally (including support and recognition from Bill
Gates).
The City of Lemon Grove provides a wide-range of convenient shopping opportunities for its residents and the surrounding region. Filled with
hundreds of stores, the central commercial district boasts large-scale regional retailers down to small and personalized craftsman to meet virtually all shopping needs.
Local sports include volleyball, softball,
flag football, indoor soccer, basketball, and baseball. An
after-school drop-in program for elementary and junior high
students, Spring and Summer Day Camp Programs, and special teen events area all available through the
Parks and Recreation Department. The city also provides an arts
complex, theater, seniors' center, and library. Various annual community-wide events are also celebrating throughout the year including
Lemon Grove Old Time Days, a Neighborhood Cleanup Day, and
Concerts in the Park (sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department).
